One of Britain's most under-rated vegetables, beetroot looks and tastes out of this world. Planted any time between mid April and mid July, its dense roots will help keep weeds at bay meaning it’s lower maintenance than other allotment additions. It can be harvested in the UK any time between late July and early January and tastes great in soups, salads and sides.
