Andrew headed east on his Yorkshire tour. First stop - Driffield

Well pickled
I've arrived in Driffield, East Yorkshire, and am staying at a friend's house for a few days. After a dinner of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding we went out for a few drinks. In one pub they had over 200 whiskies as well as pickled eggs, which are rarely seen these days, even in chip shops. I tried a few of the former and one of the latter. It tasted like a vinegary egg to be honest. Apparently they're popular dropped into a bag of salt and vinegar crisps, according to the barmaid.

Andrew forces one down
Dropped in on Mr Moo's Ice Cream Parlour today, added to the map by Haz. The 'cow pat' of which they spoke is three large scoops of ice cream, served with more cream and sauce and a flake. Having not long had breakfast I didn't have room, so opted instead for a double scoop waffle cone of Gingermoo and Biscotti flavours, and even that took some eating.

Off road!
Went to film Andrew Pern at the Star Inn, Harome but, on the way, passed a lovely looking bakery in the beautiful village of Hovingham. I popped in for a chat with owner, Elaine, who, along with her husband Chris, set up the bakery four years ago. Everything is made fresh daily, the bread by Chris during the wee hours of the morning, and the cakes and everything else by Elaine during the day. There's also a little tea room attached to the shop to get a Yorkshire cuppa along with my ginger bun, which was delicious. To the side of the Bakery there's a ford, so I took the opportunity to ford a ford in a Ford.

No-one invades Andrew's space
On a tiny cafe balanced on the edge of a cliff I found not only some nice cakes and a cup of tea, but also a fully working original Space Invaders arcade game. I fed it with 2x10p and the years just fell away. I was, however, rubbish at it, obviously I've lost the knack. I also lost a fair few 10ps too. I loved arcades as a kid.

Eat me
On the way back I dropped in to Charters Butchers & Deli added by somefin-fishy, where I picked up two lovely looking rib eye steaks for a BBQ this weekend.

A bellyful of beef
Headed to Molly's Steakhouse today in Flamborough, added to the Map by CDPDesign. Owner, James Fowles, serves up steaks from his own herd of long-legged Dexter and Highland cattle. He hangs his meat for nearly 40 days. For those who like a challenge Molly's do an 80oz steak - that's 2.5 kgs of meat. On the evening I was there this was being attempted by Paul from Nottinghamshire, watched by his partner Lindsey.
I asked if he'd done any training in preparation for dinner? "I watched the cricket this morning in the pub and had a large breakfast," he said. Champion! Given that it was going to take a while to cook, let alone eat, I didn't stick around to see if he cleared his plate. However, after a quick phone call to James a few days later I find out he managed 55oz and took the rest home vac-packed.

Queing for cod
There was a environmental abnormality today as a bright shiny object appeared in the sky causing mild panic. That's right, the sun came out today for the first and only time in August and so I headed down to Whitby. The town was packed, resembling an overcrowded penguin colony. Ahh the British seaside, you can't beat it. I was going to drop in at the Magpie Cafe but hell's teeth look at that queue! There must have been over 40 people in the line. I headed across town to Fortune's smokehouse, home of nowt but kippers. But sadly his opening hours on a Saturday are 9am till 3pm and I'd missed him by 20 minutes. To the side of the shop faint wisps of smoke were seeping from the tar-stained doors.
Last week Andrew was in York.
Next week he's off to Sheffield.
