Seasonal Calendar – Winter
Rhubarb
Rhubarb is actually a vegetable. Forced rhubarb (grown in the dark) makes its first appearance in January, and is a classic crumble ingredient.
Pears
When most British fruit seasons have ended for the year, you can still rely on the delicious pear, which stores exceptionally well throughout winter.
Celeriac
The ugly, knobbly celeriac is beautifully sweet and creamy on the inside: look out for it from October onwards. Great in soups, mash and gratin bakes.
Savoy Cabbage
With its crinkly dark green leaves, this robust cabbage is a fantastic way to get your greens during the long winter months. Great in stir-fries or steamed.
Jerusalem Artichokes
A stalwart of hearty, warming winter soups, the Jerusalem artichoke has a unique nutty flavour that goes very well with bacon.
