Backyard brewers
After a quick stop at Goodman’s Geese, gurus in all things goose-related, Andrew popped for a pint with the men behind Tunnel Brewery. Brewers, Bob Yates and Mike Walsh, set up their thriving business in the backyard of The Lord Nelson pub, Ansley in 2005 and haven’t looked back since. Dedicated to traditional brewing techniques the pair make the most of locally-sourced hops whenever they can and even employ a local artist to sketch the labels for their different brews.
The last stop in Andrew’s Midland’s tour was Staffordshire, where he tried his hand at making oatcakes. The tasty snack has been popular in the area since the time of the potteries and the local cafes still get through thousands of orders in a single day.
It seems wherever Andrew travels the local community are passionate about their culinary heritage and keen to pass on their food history. Andrew’s next stop will be the North West where the folk of Manchester and Liverpool will be asked to put their food hotspots on the Big British Map.
