Sampling the best of Scotland
Having eaten his way up the west coast of England it was time for Andrew to cross the border and sample the finest food Scotland had to offer. As the Big British Food Map celebrates British cuisine in all its guises Andrew was keen to discover the less trumpeted aspects of food north of the border and look passed the Scottish stereotype of deep-fried Mars Bars.
His first stop was with ice cream producers, Cream o' Galloway, in Ayrshire for a lesson in lollies. The husband and wife team, David and Wilma Finlay, have been making ice cream since 1994 but David's family have been running the site as dairy farm for three generations. The decision to switch into ice cream was initially made as a way to survive the tough times in farming but the couple's creations proved a hit and their organic ice creams are now sold by the bucket load including a contract with Virgin airlines. Andrew's travels have been potted with success stories such as this, as farmers and producers transform their businesses in line with the times.
