Sampling the best of North East and Yorkshire
After feasting for a month on delicious Scottish fare Andrew crossed back over the border to sample some good old Geordie grub. His first stop was an old petrol station – long out of gas but doing a roaring trade in cockles and whelks. Latimer's fish deli on the Newcastle/Sunderland border has been peddling fresh seafood classics since 1957 and Andrew lost no time in getting to grips with some mighty local lobster.
Fully refuelled once more he hit the road and headed towards Newcastle city centre and the Moorhouse Farm Shop ran by Ian and Victoria Byatt. As well as stocking a host of locally reared farmhouse meats the couple host regular open days helping the people of Newcastle get more hands-on with home grown goodies. From lessons in glazing ham to how to cook a steak, visitors to Moorhouse will come away with more than just their groceries.
Moving on, it was time for something a little sweeter so Andrew made his way to Chain Bridge Honey Farm where veteran beekeeper, Willie Robson, filled him in on the problems facing the British bee industry. From the increasing threat of disease, rising rates of pollution and the unpredictable British weather, the lot of the beekeeper is not a happy one, but with 2000 bees feasting on wild flowers Willie is still producing some pretty tasty honey.
