Time for an oil change
Just outside Wetherby, Andrew stumbled across Wharfe Valley Farm, another family run enterprise, producing rape seed oil. The Kilby family has always farmed the bright yellow crop but decided to diversify into oil three years ago. As well as packing a more intensive flavour punch, rape seed has a lower saturated fat content than olive oil and will burn at much higher temperatures, leaving Andrew musing over our national obsession with the olive equivalent.
After a quick stop at Mackenzie's Yorkshire Smokehouse, where Stella and Robert Crowson are smoking everything from duck to ostrich, and a trip to the Bondgate Bakery to sample some Yorkshire tarts, Andrew made it to York in time for tea. Betty's tearooms are something of a local institution with five branches across the county. Andrew lost no time in ordering his afternoon spread and took a lesson in the etiquette behind taking tea before trying his tongue at tea tasting – it's all in the slurp, apparently.
