Cambridge-educated Tilda Swinton is known for her distinctive and highly individual performances in films as diverse as Vanilla Sky (2001), Adaptation (2002), Young Adam (2003) and controversial filmmaker Derek Jarman's entire oeuvre. After graduating, Swinton became involved with the Royal Shakespeare Company before hooking up with Jarman. Her first screen appearance was in his Caravaggio (1986) and Swinton would go on to star in all of the director's films until his death in 1984, receiving Best Actress prices at the Venice Film Festival for her part in his Edward II in 1992. Greater recognition followed that same year for her performance in the titular role of Orlando and Swinton ended the nineties on a high with acclaimed performances in Tim Roth's stark The War Zone.
