Born Greta Louisa Gustafsson, to a poor family in Stockholm in 1905. Garbo had such a naturally magnetic personality that success fell into her lap. Featuring in a promotional film for the hairdresser's in which she worked led quickly to prominent Swedish director Mauritz Stiller taking her under his wing. Starring in Stiller's films led to the pair being snapped up by Hollywood. Although Stiller didn't last the distance, American audiences fell for Garbo instantly. Her refusal to divulge any details about her private life only fuelled the public's interest in her, and her profile rose and rose until Two-Faced Woman in 1941. In 1955 Hollywood awarded her an honorary Oscar for her screen performances.
