Born in New York, 1965, Downey didn't stand much of a chance. His father, an underground film maker, offered him his first joint at the age of 8. After dropping out of school he won small roles in films such as Weird Science (1985) and was Oscar-nominated for the title role in Chaplin (1992). Work with Robert Altman and Mike Figgis followed but was overshadowed by his drug problems.
