Liverpudlian Alison Steadman has been a staple figure of British realist films since the early seventies, collaborating with director (and later husband) Mike Leigh on working-class gems such as Hard Labour, Life Is Sweet and Secrets And Lies (1996). A highly respected stage actress, Steadman has not only won praise for her performances in productions ranging from Abigail's Party (1977) to The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice (both subsequently made into successful films) but wider recognition for her part in the seminal Dennis Potter television drama The Singing Detective (1986) and films including Terry Gilliam's The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen. In recent years, Steadman has enjoyed popularity with roles in the television adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, and comedy series Fat Friends (2000).
