Born in Santa Monica in 1960 to a TV director father and actress mother, Penn has maintained his reputation as an intense performer, a gifted director and an unpredictable character off-screen. He debuted in Taps (1981) and said "Hey bud, let's party!" in Fast Times At Ridgemont High the following year. For a long time he was best known as Madonna's husband, starring with her in Shanghai Surprise, before excelling in Dead Man Walking, Carlito's Way and U-Turn among others. His hobbies include brawling - in 1987 he was jailed for lamping an extra - but these days he's better known for his expertise as a director, with successes including recent release The Pledge.
