The writing was on the wall when, aged eight, Edward Norton asked his drama teacher what the objective was in a particular scene. Born August 1969 in Columbia, Maryland, he studied history at Yale while acting in student productions. After working for his grandfather in Japan for a year, he worked as a waiter and took acting classes for two years before playwright Edward Albee cast him for his play Fragments. When Leonardo DiCaprio turned down Primal Fear (1996) the role went to Norton, who was Oscar nominated for it. Nominated again for American History X, he turned down Saving Private Ryan before making his directoral debut with 2000's warm, fluffy Keeping The Faith
