Born in Kent in 1946, she gave up her job at British Rail at 27 to go to drama college. After 20 years of working in theatre and television she made her film debut in The Witches, in 1990, and starred as Brad Pitt's mother in Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It in 1992. In 1996 Brenda Blethyn was cast in Mike Leigh's Secrets And Lies. The film was a critical hit and earned Blethyn a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination. Since then, she has built on her success in films like Girl's Night, Little Voice and Saving Grace.
