Born in Durham just after the turn of the century, Flora McKenzie Robson was a distinguished character actor with a stage and screen career spanning some sixty years. After graduating from RADA as a Bronze Medallist, she made her theatrical debut in 1921. A decade later she began appearing in films, embodying dignified (often regal) characters. She played Queen Elizabeth I no less than three times, in 1937's Fire Over England, The Lion Has Wings and Errol Flynn swashbuckler The Sea Hawk (1940). Her Hollywood career also included notable performances in the Olivier/Oberon-led Wuthering Heights and Ingrid Bergman classic Saratoga Trunk (1945), which earned her an Oscar nomination. Created Dame of the British Empire in 1960, Robsons final film before her death in 1984 was the 1981 fantasy Clash Of The Titans.
