The British actress won Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for her subtle performance as a woman reunited with her biological mother, in Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies in 1996. Born in 1967, she gained overnight international attention from Secrets & Lies, and since then has starred in Career Girls (1997), The Cell (2000) and Spy Game (2001). Marianne Jean-Baptiste is also a talented musician and composed some of the music to Career Girls.
