McGregor was born in 1971 in Perthshire, Scotland. Inspired to act by his afghan-sporting Uncle Denis (Lawson, who played Wedge in the Star Wars films), Ewan joined the Perth Repertory Theatre. A degree course at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama followed, and he was the star of Dennis Potter's TV musical Lipstick On Your Collar. He deservedly hit the big time in Trainspotting, in which he lost stones to play drug ravaged anti-hero Renton for director Danny Boyle. McGregor's career has never faltered but he's made some mistakes, period drama Emma being one, but the actor's laid back naturalism has eased him through more contemporary material, including Brassed Off, Little Voice and Black Hawk Down. A fan of Star Wars, McGregor jumped at the role of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episodes I to III.
