Born in Weston-super-Mare in 1939 - just after, he has claimed, the family changed its name from Cheese. Cleese appeared in the Cambridge Footlights with Peter Cook and David Frost, on various TV and radio comedy shows, and three films before Monty Python's Flying Circus first aired in 1969. Cleese left the Pythons before their final series, and since then has been the most successful performer of the six, with his successes including A Fish Called Wanda, the slightly self-parodic Clockwise and an appearance with his good friends The Muppets in The Great Muppet Caper. He describes himself as "the fifth nicest Python", just ahead of Eric Idle.
