The character actor of character actors, Laughton is remembered for his brilliant portrayal of the king in Alexander Korda's The Private Life Of Henry VIII (1933). He began life as a hotel manager before moving to acting, and was one of the pioneers of the West End-to-BroadwayHollywood route to fame. He specialised in darker characters and comedy, witnessed in luminous turns as the Emperor Nero in The Sign Of The Cross (1932), the evil doctor in Island Of Lost Souls (1932), the incestuous father in The Barretts Of Wimpole Street (1934), Captain Bligh in Mutiny On The Bounty (1935) and the hunchback in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1939).
