The "actress who sings", Barbra Streisand was born in New York in 1942 and has found unprecedented success as an actress, director and producer. First noticed by the music industry after winning a singing competition in a small New York club, Streisand made an auspicious film debut in the 1968 film Funny Girl, winning an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance. Further success came in the 1972 comedy hit, What's Up Doc. Streisand's directoral debut Yentl, in which she also starred, received five Academy Award nominations in 1983. She repeated the success with her second film as a director, The Prince Of Tides which received seven. Oh yeah, she also has thirteen multi-platinum selling albums.
