Joyce Grenfell performed on both stage and radio during the 1940s and 1950s, but it was for her role as gawky matron Ruby Gates in the St Trinian's comedies that the British public most loved her. Born in London, in 1910, she came to the attention of theatre producer Herbert Farjeon whilst performing a character monologue at a social gathering. Grenfell then became famous as a stage performer and singer, before getting the chance to work in film in Ealing Comedy Run For Your Money in 1949. Roles in The Happiest Days Of Your Life (1950), The Million Pound Note (1953) and the famous St Trinian comedies followed.
