London-born Emily Watson may owe Helena Bonham-Carter a drink - Bonham-Carter's late withdrawal from Lars Von Trier's Breaking The Waves (1996) allowed Watson the opportunity to deliver her remarkable, Oscar nominated debut performance. She was undeterred by her initial rejection from drama school. After graduating from Bristol University Watson worked as a waitress and secretary before gaining entrance to the London Drama Studio.
Following her breakthrough in Von Trier's highly acclaimed film, Watson learnt the cello to concert standard and achieved a second Oscar nomination a mere two years later with her lead performance in Jacqueline Du Pre biopic Hilary And Jackie. In the intervening years, Watson has boosted her international reputation with roles in Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love and Hannibal prequel Red Dragon (2002).
