Winona Horowitz named after her birthplace, Winona, Minnasota. Her brothers Jubal and Uri were less lucky. Born into an alternative lifestyle - her parents were friends of Allen Ginsberg, her Godfather was Timothy Leary and she grew up in a commune - Ryder went to acting classes at the American Conservatory Theatre. She changed her surname at the suggestion of the director of her debut film. An album by Mitch Ryder was playing at the time. Her name was once tatooed on the body of then-fiance Johnny Depp, who has since had it lasered to reveal the legend: "Wino Forever". Winona caused a media sensation in 2001 after being arrested for shoplifting. She claimed at the time that it was to help her prepare for a role.
