Helena Bonham Carter was born in London in May 1966. Born into good stock - a famous director and prime minister sit on different branches of the family tree - by 15 she'd landed her first professional job, playing Juliet in a hifi advert. She turned down Cambridge University to play teen Queen Lady Jane, director Trevor Nunn having spotted her in Tatler. Two days after filming finished, Merchant Ivory offered her the role of Lucy Honeychurch in A Room With A View and Period Helena was born. After having to wear a corset for years in period dramas, Helena Bonham Carter broke away from typecasting by starring in Fight Club and playing a monkey in Planet Of The Apes.
