Typically cast as 'the heavy', Shaw was a talented character actor who always managed to bring depth and humanity to the most menacing of roles. Born in Scotland, he was drawn to both acting and writing from an early age, training at RADA and then earning a living on the stage and in small film roles. International fame arrived with his turn as the superfit hardman in From Russia With Love (1963). Three years later he won a best supporting actor nomination for his dynamic performance as the young Henry VIII in Zimmerman's A Man For All Seasons. Hollywood recognised his talents, and he became the villain/target of The Sting and then the grizzled shark chaser in Jaws, the role he's most remembered for. He died before his time of a heart attack, aged 51.
