Kim Basinger was born in Athens, Georgia in December 1953 to a ballet dancer and a jazz musician. A shy child, she found her confidence appearing in beauty pageants, and by the time she was 20 was a top model earning $1,000 a day. After appearing in numerous commercials, she took acting lessons and appeared on TV and as a Bond girl. A Playboy shoot and a starring role in 9 1/2 Weeks brought her to prominence, and she has gone on to trade largely on her sex appeal. More recently she won an Oscar for her sensational performance in L.A. Confidential.
