Who else could play Ben-Hur (for which he won an Oscar in 1960), hand down the ten commandments, take on a planet of talking monkeys and still have time to defend the NRA, but Charlton Heston. Born in Illinois in 1924, Heston's gravitas and ability to play larger-than-life roles made him an international superstar in such films as The Greatest Show On Earth, Ben-Hur, El Cid and Planet Of The Apes. Charlton Heston died on 5 April 2008.
