Greer Garson was a huge hit in Hollywood during the 1940s, when war required actresses to be dignified and stiff upper-lipped, and she earned seven Oscar nominations during that time. Born in London, in 1904, she didn't begin her acting career until the age of 24, when she took to the stage alongside Lawrence Olivier in The Golden Arrow. While performing in theatre in London, Garson was discovered by legendary MGM mogul Louis B Mayer and whisked away to Hollywood. After a slow start, she won rave reviews and an Oscar nomination for her performance in Goodbye Mr Chips in 1939. MGM knew it had a major star and Garson starred in Pride And Prejudice and Blossoms In The Dust, before winning a Best Actress Oscar for Mrs Miniver in 1942.
