Tilda Swinton plays Orlando - the occasionally morphing, never ageing hero and heroine of Virginia Woolf's classic tale. A sumptuous adaptation
Lavish adaptation of Virginia Woolf's 400-year romp through history and attitudes in the company of an ageless Tilda Swinton as Orlando.
Changing from an Elizabethan nobleman to a modern-day woman, she trips lightly through the centuries, falling in love, falling from grace and meeting some fascinating characters along the way. In keeping with the gender-bending theme, ageing queen Quentin Crisp plays the ageing Queen Elizabeth, and keep an eye out for 1980s pop star Jimmy Somerville as well.
Stunning period costume by the Oscar-winner Sandy Powell, who was also responsible for the roughs and doublets in Shakespeare in Love and Velvet Goldmine.

Verdict
Sumptuous and witty book-to-screen treatment for Virginia Woolf's novel, with graceful and ambitious direction by Sally Potter.
