  2. Brilliant cinema photography and sound effects, (appreciated in the right cinema). It is down to earth and frighteningly realistic. A five star performance by Caine, portraying a widower haunted by the angry feelings of an older and seemingly helpless generation, as they see the country they fought for and watched their comrades die for, being destroyed through the liberal decay of society. Caine plays very much the reluctant hero. I expected to be cheering him on half way through the film, but instead found myself mesmerized by the realism and the reminder of the horrific destruction gangs, guns and knives bring to the streets of Britain every day. An excellent, yet very sobering film. One to watch!

  3. This was a movie that started real slow and reflected the pace of life for a lonely pensioner, soon to be a widower, living in a run down council estate made dangerous by local youth crime and the indifference of the Police. When Harry's wife died, it was revealed to us he'd lost a child too...Harry's quiet desperation was plain to see. When his friend was killed, he didn't break like a straw, or a dam - he just sets about the business of finding the villains and executing them. Caine's lack of histrionics and physical shortcomings, due to his age, made the characterisation the more powerful. Cleverly, Harry wasn't put into situations that couldn't be believed - he's no James Bond. Harry's service in Northern Ireland was also neatly alluded to, not just by telling us he was a Marine, but by the techniques he used against the hoodies - he could only have learned these in Northern Ireland - he could shoot straight too, unlike his foes, who wielded guns in a beautifully amateurish way. Although this was a straightforward story without sub-plot as such, there were a lot of underlying textures that helped to make it believable - supporting cast members were impressive - the hoodies were particularly intimidating and came across as the insecure and frightened individuals they really were - the viewer couldn't help but feel they would do anything, anywhen and cause untold suffering, pain and death along the way - however, a nice touch was Emily Mortimer's portrayal of a principled, caring copper, not tough enough for the job; she came across more as a social worker than a DI and this reflected perfectly the dilemma of the crime-fighting, undermanned Police who have to contend with PACE and PC. Quite rightly, Michael Caine should be credited with a great performance, but he led a strong cast. Some attention could have been paid to Mortimer's boss though, as this character came across as two dimensional and stereotypical; it would have made for an interesting plot if he'd agreed with her request to investigate Brown, so an opportunity missed here I think. Overall, a good film - don't think it will be a classic - but one that will bear watching again.

  4. The makers of this film are to be congratulated. In making a 'revenge movie' built round M Caine (a good enough idea in itself) they have chosen to set it in an inner city housing estate tyrannised by young drug gangs, knowing that these days there is no backing away from the harsh realities in presenting such a subject on screen. And harsh realities are what we get. Only the slightly over-redemptive ending lifts us almost back to sanity after a hard-hitting hour or so. Critics love to pigeon-hole such products of the modern cinema - but this deserves a special category. The scripting is good throughout (despite a rather crudely portrayed police superintendant out for zero tolerance when finally left with no alternative) and the filming itself exceptional.

  5. I'll try not to tell you what this movie is about or how amazing the performances are. What I am going to tell you is that it left me speachless. Its the most powerful film I have ever seen. Its well worth watching and those who think that life on UK housing estates aren't as bad as everyone says I know they are and this film brings it home; it doesn't shy away from the reality. Its not glamorous and there is no element of escapism but its honest, brutally so.

  8. This film was fab! I just came home from seeing it and I had to write something. The first 15 mins were like art, hardly any dialouge but fantasticly done. The movment in it was amazing and directed awsomely. I really would see this again. I don't think i have ever seen a film with a story line quite like it. So original and fresh. It really shows how the youth of today have gone out of hand and are taking over and there selfishness. I am only 18 my self and I do not belive all kids are bad ones, but the kids in this film make you angry, the cruel things they do to people! The film is gory but not too graphic so don't worry but it's not one for elders in my opinion. Thank you!
