Road House Review

Negulesco, who became a flamboyant director of CinemaScope follies, also made genre movies, including this dark, love-triangle thriller. Lupino plays Lily, a singer hired by a road-house owner (Widmark) and his manager Jetty (Wilde). The former becomes besotted by her, while she is drawn to Jetty. The boss frames his former friend, then accepts responsibility for him - limiting his life and love. A heady situation for a highly strung melodrama which can end only in trouble. Widmark does his wicked best as the obsessed would-be lover, and waiting in the wings is the great Holm to gently out-act them all.
