Adapted from the bestselling Stephen King book, the chilling tale of a lonely high school outsider who is tortured by her deranged mother and who develops devastating telekinetic powers in tandem with the onset of puberty. Brian De Palma's first commercial hit

It is all too easy to be appalled at the vulgar virtuosity of a director who, courtesy of King's first screen credit, presents us with a girl tormented by unpopularity at high school and by a religious fanatic of a mother back home.

Easy because director De Palma does not allow overt sympathy for the girl (Spacek) until her schoolmates devise a disgusting joke (involving pig's blood) at the school prom. They reckon without the teenager's telekinetic powers (her mother gets crucified by the household cutlery), and she wreaks a terrible revenge, allowing De Palma to notch the movie several points above hysteria.

The film shocked contemporary audiences because of the disturbing shower scene and the harsh response of Carrie's peers. Today it is still one of the most adult of all horror movies, with a scary ending.

Also notable for an early role for John Travolta.
Verdict
Carrie rivals The Shining for the title of greatest ever Stephen King adaptation.
