The Battleship Potemkin: Eisenstein's movie is, nowadays, pretty much a 'set text' for film students. His 'montage' theory of editing has influenced many a director from Hollywood and beyond. But aside from its conceptual aspect, the film is a riveting story of a people's uprising against the powers that be of Tsarist, pre-revolutionary Russia.
