Tom Harper's Director's Diary

Tom Harper found success as a filmmaker with his critically acclaimed shorts Cubs and Cherries. With the shoot for his first feature, The Scouting Book For Boys, underway, he lets us in on his diary.

Tom Harper with Thomas Turgoose on The Scouting Book For Boys shoot

The Scouting Book for Boys follows young David, played by rising star Thomas Turgoose (This Is England, Somers Town), who lives with his friend Emily on a caravan park on the Norfolk coast. Rocked by the news that she has to move away with her father, David helps Emily to hide out in a remote cave. But as their secret becomes more complicated, David's world begins to transform in ways he never imagined.

A Celador, Screen East and Film4 collaboration, the script is from 'Skins' writer and acclaimed playwright Jack Thorne. Producers are Christian Colson and Ivana MacKinnon of Celador, with cinematography from Robbie Ryan (Red Road, Brick Lane).

Recce to the Suffolk and Norfolk coastlines. As some of our finance is from Screen East we need to film in what they call Objective Two areas in the East of England. This drastically limits where we can film, but I think there are enough interesting locations within these areas to make the film work. Not as good as the perfect caravan park I wanted to film in Wales though. Ugh, it breaks my heart. It absolutely pisses it down the entire time and the sun only comes out when we head for home. Still, according to recce rules, this means we'll have a sunny shoot.

Andrea Arnold's film has been pushed another 3 weeks which means the dates will clash and Robbie Ryan the DP is unlikely to be able to do our film. This is a real blow as his style would be perfect for this film.

Keep hearing about small British films that die a death and never do any business and keep thinking about how to overcome this. Often come up with rash ideas such as freezeframes, playing sections backwards. Read a blog from Jurgan Wolf that says, 'When you brainstorm, take your ten most radical ideas and tell yourself that they are 'normal' responses that you now want to get beyond by thinking even more radically. By expanding the boundaries of what you will allow yourself to think, you may hit on a better solution.'

  1. Tales of an extra. It's quite a priveleged position to be a " supporting artist" on a moovie, there is the inevitable hanging around, turning up on time, resuming posistion one, etc, it isnt rocket science! It all started last November for me when I asked to work on "Dean Spanley ", directed by Toa Fraser.I had taken my son Thibault along to a local casting here in Norfolk. They chose me! Why? As far as I am concerned at 54, I am past my " sell by date ", but according to a make-up lady "it's always the case, they want the dads , not the sons". Next thing I know I am appearing alongside Peter O Toole, Sam Neill, Bryan Browne, Jeremy Northam. Did I learn anything from these Hollywood greats? You bet, the more I watched, the more I learnt, and the one memory was how consistent their performances were. Several months on, and four moovies knotched up , it was "Scouting". Now I know this is a great little film, dont ask me to explain, I cant. It's like a detectives second sense, I call it "esp", extras sensory perception! Turgoose is a fine young actor, it was obvious, and i am sure he will go a long way. Or the way the director exploited Holkham beach , with its huge panorama. Could have been the rapport between writer and director. Or was it the scenes in the campsite clubhouse,it all seemed so familiar, so British, so quirky. Like I said , I know a good un , " Scouting Book For Boys " will be a fine film , what we do best. Shame there arent more little gems like this. Nick Shaw. Oct2008.
