Paul Taylor on We Are Together

We Are Together

First-time director Paul Taylor talks about how his experience as a volunteer in South Africa formed the basis of an award-winning documentary

While studying filmmaking Paul Taylor traveled to South Africa as part of a volunteer program to work with children affected by the Aids crisis. He was stationed at an Agape Orphanage, where children who have lost their parents through the disease are helped. Bolstered by their collective strength, the community formed a choir. During the making of his film We Are Together, Taylor saw the start of their worldwide tour to raise awareness of Aids and poverty, and the release of a successful album. The film has picked up audience awards at many festivals for its inspiring, uplifting story centered on the spirited Moya children, and gained support from Bono, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. All profits from the release of the film are entering an education fund for the Agape children.

Do you have a filmmaking background, or was this simply a film borne out of you finding a good story?
I was a film student, at Bournemouth University. I went to South Africa after my first year on a volunteering program, and that's when I met the kids at Agape. I came back, carried on studying and wanted an excuse to go back out there. I saw there was potential in the story. I started scraping funds together to return the following summer and make the film.

With all the profits going into an educational fund for the Agape children, how did you get such experienced people involved in the project?
We got the footage and went round showing people what we had, and telling them about the project. People were very supportive; we got a lot of good deals from post production houses. Our main editor, Masahiro Hirakubo [who works frequently with Danny Boyle] was just at a good time in his career, looking for something interesting and challenging to take on.

  2. I was moved by this documentary, and truly truly inspired..it seems that most of the world is chasing the wrong things, including myself. I have 2 young children and I realise we go about life stressing about silly things when the joy is right in front of us..

  5. I honestly do feel that this film is one of the best i have seen. I cried all the way throught it. Especially the pan down establishing shot when the group was singing we are together when they built the new orphanage at the end. That was magic.

  6. Whereabouts is the Agape Orphanage in South Africa? I watched the programme and am hoping to visit South Africa, and wondered if it is anywhere I might visit.

  7. Unfortunately I only saw the last part of this film. Where can I buy the music CD, or is there a DVD of the film?

  8. We are Together. A very touching film. In my opinion it's a production that raises the standard of TV! However it didn't explain how the children were suddenly in New York - I presume that somebody sponsored them. I would like to know if the children's CD is available to buy ind if so how it can be obtained.

  9. This was a very moving film, both happy and sad, making me feel very humble when I saw the love and care the children had for each other. In particular the illness and death of the boy and the closeness of the whole community. Very inspiring.

  10. Please - how can I help?? What a wonderfully moving film. tastefully done yet powerfully effective and soul searching. As I sat watching this evening on Channel 4 I looked around me and thought of all that I posessed and enjoyed and saw the hardship of the delightful children of Agape and the movingly wonderful family the film centred on. What can I do to help? Thank you for bringing this into my sitting room. Thank you for introducing me to Agape, to the children, to the family and most of all to the courage and daily bravery of these wonderful people. the young people of our country taking drugs, drinking alcohol, gangs, stabbings, muggings and much more should be ashamed of themselves. These dear young children and teenagers grow up in such dreadful hardship and yet, look at the fantastic smiles and the most angelic and soul moving music. This film has been by far the best I have ever seen on TV. Thank you thank you thank you. Will it ever be possible to see another one made in five years time as a follow up to see what has happened to Agape and the children who are there now? Humble thanks to you and to everyone who made this amazing film. Rachael Scott Hunter
