Nick Harris - Literary Agent

Nick Harris is a literary agent representing some of the UK's top authors as well as up and coming screenwriting and directing talent. As part of our continuing series of articles on script development, Making Movies asks him what it takes for a writer to build a profile in the business.

CV
A graduate in Law, Nick Harris began his career as an assistant producer at Saatchi & Saatchi, moved on to the business affairs and acquisitions department at PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, and later became a media agent. He joined AP Watt's media department in March 1999. As well as developing a list of highly talented writers, directors and producers, he is responsible for book-to-film deals. Nick was appointed a director of AP Watt in January 2002.

What sort of people do you represent?
I represent novelists, screenwriters, playwrights and directors. A P Watt was founded in 1875, which I believe makes it the oldest literary agency in the world! We represent a number of clients, including Zadie Smith, Philip Pullman, Yasmina Reza, Nicholas Evans, Giles Foden, Jon Ronson, Graham Swift and Tony Parsons. We also represent the estates of P G Wodehouse, Somerset Maugham, W. B. Yeats and H G Wells. Even before we started to represent dramatists, A P Watt had a history of being involved with film through our books - we represented Babe, The Horse Whisperer and The English Patient to name a few. As well as negotiating the book-to-film deals on behalf of A P Watt authors, I also represent up and coming writers and directors.
