Wayne Kramer on The Cooler

Pull up a chair and learn how a first-time director stuck to his guns, bagged William H Macy, and made one of the more intriguing American films of the year.

The Cooler is about more than just the fickle nature of lady luck, says director Wayne Kramer. "It's also about a bigger landscape of Las Vegas that's dying, that's getting taken over," says the 39-year old Kramer. "It's becoming Disney-fied, and in a way that's what's happening to the movie industry in America. Intelligent, distinctive, edgy stuff is getting swallowed up by real mainstream, dumbed-down films. Something that has a particular original quality is just getting washed away, because at the end of the day you can make more money out of selling to the masses."

Kramer knows all about the travails of Hollywood. South African-born, he has lived in Los Angeles since 1986, where he began to pursue a career as a screenwriter. "It's just really tough when you get to LA and you want to proclaim yourself as a director but you don't have anything to show for it," he says. "So the only easy way you can get to direct a film is if you take the path of making music videos, or you can write a script that people are interested in, and you can get your profile up like that."
