What did you learn at the BBC?
The training at the BBC was great. We learned everything - wigs, facial, period make-up. It's been a great safety net for my career. On Casualty I had the chance to really experiment with injuries, using lots of different kinds of blood, bruises and cuts, and even using prosthetics which I had learned there.
What is stage blood made from?
We use syrup-based liquid and food colourings and powder for the pigmentation (colouring). They used to use this stage blood called 'Kensington Gore' but they found it stained everything, the skin and the clothes. You have to be able to wash make-up in case you are doing a scene straight after. Sugar-based liquids and food colourings wash out much more easily.
You do both hair and make-up. Can you specialise in just one?
You can. I prefer to do both so I can shape the whole character.
