Eric Brevig - Visual Effects Expert

Talks to us about the challenges involved in creating blockbuster movie Pearl Harbor's magnificent special effects. He explains how the battle for Pearl Harbor was recreated and describes his satisfaction at being involved in the groundbreaking SFX work on the film.

How did you get involved with Pearl Harbor?
The director Michael Bay approached Industrial Light And Magic (George Lucas' special effects outfit) because he needed to use visual effects which had not ever been accomplished before. When I heard of his interest, I immediately wanted to rise to the challenge. He approached ILM at the end of 1999 and asked me to prove to him that we could make a computer graphic of an airplane that was convincing enough to look real. We created a model and showed it to him with a picture of a real craft and he couldn't tell the difference. We also filmed a real Japanese plane flying off the coast and then created a fully animated CGI model of it and he couldn't tell any difference between these too either. He thought this was proof enough that we could bring to life all the ideas he was thinking about.
