Mark takes a look at the strange connection between William Friedkin, his masterpiece The Exorcist and Japanese erotic thriller Onibaba
I have often been accused of attempting, quite fatuously, to draw connections between any movie worthy of note and my own favourite film The Exorcist. If you're a regular reader of this column, you'll know that in the past few weeks alone I've been tempted to draw parallels between this classic supernatural shocker and the comedy films of Woody Allen, a shackling which I confess may seem to stretch credibility to its limits.
Elsewhere, I've been known to declare that there really is not much difference between The Exorcist and Casablanca, It's A Wonderful Life and most recently Mary Poppins - such is the nature of obsession. This week, however, I make a firm promise not to mention The Exorcist again for at least one whole month... not, that is, until after I've just had time to tell you about its strange connection with an ageing Japanese thriller playing this week on FilmFour World: the extraordinary Onibaba.
