Warp Films, the company behind Dead Man's Shoes, have launched a new digital film studio that could see two-page treatments ending up at a cinema near you. Making Movies gets the low down on the future of filmmaking from the Warp X team
Why launch a studio now?
I think we've seen from films like Dead Man's Shoes, Napoleon Dynamite, Wolf Creek and Me And You And Everyone We Know that low budget production methods mean films can be made faster and leaner, with no excess baggage and still reach a large international audience. Our plan is to make films which audiences find exhilarating, whether they're original interpretations of marketable genres, or stories with a passion and hook that gets them noticed.
Does this mean crews working long hours for low rates?
No - we've put as much effort into our business model as our creative one. While the film crew will work for Equity and PACT minimums, we want cast, crew and producers to benefit from the commercial success of the films they've worked on, so we're offering a more generous participation structure than the industry norm. Crucially, we'll set up a 'reward tunnel' so unlike other films where profits are paid once the marketing costs have been clawed back, profits from Warp X films will be shared out from day one.
