Cannes 2005 Diary

This year, we've managed to pack one of our own off to the French Riviera to soak up some sun, blag a few parties, and watch the odd movie. Oh, and possibly rub shoulders with the occasional celeb too....

Cannes, the results

The dust has settled, the stars have left and Cannes has returned to being just another holiday destination. All that remains is for us to tell you who won what. Right&

Palme d'Or: The Child (L'Enfant) by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne

Oscar-winners Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman presented the Dardenne brothers with the Palme d'Or for their film about a tearaway couple whose lives are changed by the arrival of their first child. The brothers dedicated the award to Florence Aubenas and Hussein Hanoun, who are being held hostage in Iraq.

Grand Prix: Broken Flowers by Jim Jarmusch

US director Jim Jarmusch's film about an aging Don Juan trying to track down the son he never knew he had received the second-place grand prize. Jarmusch thanked actor Bill Murray and the rest of the stars of his movie, before going on to state that, while he doesn't believe in awards for artistic works, he appreciates joining the Cannes family.

Best Actress Award: Hana Laszlo for Free Zone

Ralph Fiennes presented actress Hana Laszlo with an award for her performance in Amos Gitai's film Free Zone. The movie, which stars Natalie Portman as an American who travels out of Jerusalem and into the Free Zone in a taxi, has proven controversial given the political tensions in the region, but that hasn't stopped it from winning acclaim.
