Film4 Summer Screen 2009 At Somerset House

30 July to 8 August 2009

London's most beautiful open-air cinema is back for 2009, as Film4 Summer Screen returns to the glorious Edmond J Safra Fountain Court at Somerset House. A cornerstone of the city's cinematic calendar, the 10-day series takes in everything from recent blockbusters to cult classics, joyful musicals to chilling thrillers - all delivered on a state-of-the-art screening set-up with full surround sound. There will also be DJs and companion events in Behind The Screen. Arrive early for a courtyard picnic before the projector starts rolling on the outdoor film event of the summer.

The eerie atmosphere of misty Venice creeps across the courtyard of Somerset House as Nicolas Roeg's 1975 masterpiece casts its sinister spell. Grieving couple Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie discover dark secrets waiting for them down the ancient city's narrow streets.

Thursday 6 August
Strangers On A Train (PG)
A fiendishly entertaining thriller from the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. Two men meet on a train and 'swap' murders, although only one intends to carry out the criss-cross killings. It's all the fun of the fair as Hitch puts his perverse plot into meticulous motion.

Friday 7 August
Cool Hand Luke/Road House (18)
Two cool movies about American mavericks. Paul Newman is the blue-eyed anti-hero working on a chain gang in Cool Hand Luke. Brainy bouncer Patrick Swayze dispenses old school action in Road House.

Saturday 8 August
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (PG)
Harrison Ford is heroic archaeologist Indiana Jones in Steven Spielberg's essential action adventure.

Go Behind The Screen to find out more about film at Somerset House, with this series of talks, screenings and other special events accompanying Film4 Summer Screen. Actors, directors and other industry insiders will be discussing the features playing during the series, offering fresh perspectives on the art of moviemaking and bringing you closer to your favourite films. Be sure to book ahead - all events have limited capacity.

INFORMATION
What should I bring?
There is no fixed seating in the courtyard. You are welcome to bring your own rugs, blankets and cushions to sit on (sorry no chairs, or portable furniture - inflatable or otherwise). Rugs will also be available to buy at a cost of £15.

A range of delicious, seasonal food is available to buy on site from 6.30pm, and there is also a fully-licensed bar and coffee point. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic but we regret that no bottles, glass or cans are allowed into the courtyard.

can you take in your own food and wine to have while your watching the film? going to see alien/poltergeist tom night and don't want to have to pay fortunes for there own stuff. Does anyone know if you're allowed bring in your own foods and drinks?

I went on to the ticketmaster website and found that all the outdoor screening tickets for somerset house were sold out i also called up to see if any tickets had recently come available, sadly no luck. is there any other website/way to get tickets for me and my friend? i especially want to go see shawshank redemption on the 3rd of Aug. Is it possible to get tickets on the day at somerset house or anywhere else?

Agree with jay and many others on here!! Its the same old story big events/gigs etc are ALWAYS held in London or the surrounding area.Why can't we have an open air cinema event in the North of England??? Oh and i hear the tickets are sold out already...figures. The choice of some of the movies leaves a lot to be desired why no Back to the future,Batman,The Lost Boys the list goes on.Anyway my parting comment is this... Film 4 get a grip the entire population of the uk does'nt live in London consider the REST OF THE UK!!!

i dont mean to be negative this is a great idea and would be great fun but hell £13 pound to see indianna jones im a massive fan of these films but i could go buy the box set again for less than that with all the films in ,and why not other classics ,star wars ,back to the future etc.i would love to see all these films on a huge screen in an open air cinema and i would gladly pay normal cinema prices .but you cant take a folding chair, if you want to sit its on a blanket ,you can carry one with you hundreds of miles then drag the blooming thing back home at midnight or purchase a nasty one for 15 quid,and why london its allways london yes its the capital yes lots of people live there but there is an entire country that spans thousands of miles that should be catered for,im sure its gonna be real easy for joe bloggs from cumbria or jane bloggs from edinburgh to grab there blanket and drag there narrow backsides hundreds of miles to take part in an event they really want to attend .and then theres train fares or transport issues .all in all it could cost them a hundred pounds to be part of an exciting event.so lets see ya get to spend a fortune to be uncomfortable sat on a cobbled floor after travelling for hours when at the end of it, it could rain to see a film you've seen a hundred times sounds great were do i get tickets,oh sorry theres non available.film 4 please i beg of you sort it out

I went to a Stella Artois outdoor screening years ago to see Quadrophenia and it was free - apart from the booze. Great idea if it was free - can't see anything that takes my fancy in that film line-up - that or I've seen them a million times!

£1 booking fee per ticket rip off. Why do the films start at 9.15? Finish very late and many people will need to travel home to outer London and beyond

...least you could do with 'Raiders...'revisited is play ALL four Indiana Jones films back to back! and i've just read the tickets are all sold out too. ...I don't own a credit card either. Raiders is the only Indy film I haven't yet seen on the big screen. 'Shoo shoo tupid Shab bah sht ardsh' ...you could warn them if only you spoke Hovitos!

Re: music, it's actually the Aquarium movement from Suite of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens, which has a heavy influence on the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack. It was driving me crazy too before I remembered!

What exactly is "state of the art screening" is it 35mm with digital cinema sound, is it non-cinema digital projection? is it 2K DLP Cinema or 4K LCD projection? It would be nice to know what you are paying for?

I think this is a wonderful idea, however i do agree with the people who say it would be great to put a similar event on up North, it would be lapped up, not everyone can make it down to London.

I agree with LA. When I saw the advert for this I thought it would be great to go to this superb setting as a family (11 year old son).Only 3 films are available. Disappointing; will not be going.

I remember about 12 years ago 4film did a similar thing in parks (Clapham Common). It was free and was great fun (sponsored by Stella Artois) Any chance of having something similar. Sposored events for free in parks once again. (after all channel 4 is partly funded by licence fee money, most of us are already paying.)
