Jack Black on Tenacious D In 'The Pick Of Destiny'

'The Simon And Garfunkel Of Rock' on being awesome and having abnormally large heads

Jack Black isn't very fat. He's stocky, sure, even plump, but he's not obese. And next to the positively portly Kyle Gass - resplendent today in long shorts and blue T-shirt - the Tenacious D frontman and King Kong star looks almost skinny.

"I've been bigger," sighs Black when the issue of his weight comes up. "But even when I was a larger man, I could still rock."

Supping from a coffee the size of a KFC bargain bucket, Kyle Gass has also never allowed his girth to get in the way of his greatness. "I often forget how awesome I am," he smiles. "Sometimes, I'll be out and about, and I'll completely forget that I'm a member of one of the most powerful duos on the planet. And then someone comes up to me and says, 'Hey, you're awesome!' and then I remember that - hey! - I really do rock."

The rock credentials of Black and Gass - or JB and KG as they're also known - will become clear to all who experience Tenacious D In 'The Pick Of Destiny', the group's first big-screen adventure which traces their amazing transformation from tragic no-hopers to bona fide rock gods. But while the film is (largely) fictional, there's nothing nonsensical about the D's success. From a hit album and best-selling DVD to an HBO TV series and sell-out tours, Tenacious D are now so big, they're as much a brand as a band.
