50 British Films To See Before You Die

Film4's critics have been busy debating essential cinema from the sceptered isle. Here are their findings

Zulu

50. This Sporting Life
It's about rugby league, beer, grit and tough lads, but it's also a profound commment on relationships loaded with symbolism and rich in emotion.

49. The Devils
Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave star in Ken Russell's extravagant tale of religious oppression and sexual hysteria in seventeenth century France.

48. The Man In The White Suit
Alec Guinness and Joan Greenwood star in this darkly comic fable about a scientist who invents a dirt-repelling indestructible fibre, to the consternation of self-serving capitalists, unionists - and washerwomen everywhere.

47. Gregory's Girl
Essential British 80s teen movie, starring John Gordon Sinclair as the goofy schoolboy infatuated with a fantastic female footballer in his class.

46. The Man Who Would Be King
Connery and Caine combine in this cautionary tale about two soldier-adventurers who head for Kafiristan to make their fortunes - and are raised to kingship by the fierce tribes that live there.

45. Ice Cold In Alex
Fondly remembered as a Sunday TV fixture, this World War II yarn about the crew of an army ambulance stuck in the desert achieves classic status through its powerfully straightforward storytelling and a quality supporting cast.

44. Repulsion
A chilling look at the inexplicable and unpredictable nature of violent psychosis, a terrific, disturbing thriller filmed by master of the macabre, Roman Polanski, and featuring Catherine Deneuve.

43. A Hard Day's Night
Restored version of The Beatles' first movie, documenting a fictional day in the life of John, Paul, George and Ringo. Madcap adventures and classic songs abound.

42. Zulu
Vintage tale of the attack by 4,000 Zulus on a small British outpost in 1870s Natal. Stars Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins and Michael Caine.

41. Kind Hearts And Coronets
Alec Guinness has a field day in this ultra-black Ealing classic, playing all the members of an effete, aristocratic family as they get bumped off, one by one.
