Amar Akbar Anthony (Manmohan Desai, 1977)
In the 1970s, Hindi cinema was dominated by action movies and revenge sagas. Amar Akbar Anthony came as a big surprise and became a huge hit. Three brothers, Amar (Vinod Khanna), Akbar (Rishi Kapoor) and Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan) are separated from their parents in their childhood by a combination of fate and villainy. They are raised as Hindu, Muslim and Christian respectively but are united at the end of this wacky and wild movie. Despite Bachchan's popularity as an action hero, he shines here as the street-wise Anthony Gonsalves.
Andaaz (Mehboob Khan, 1945)
An early and brilliant example of the love triangle, a favourite theme in Indian popular cinema. Nina (Nargis) is loved by two men: Dilip (Dilip Kumar in a most memorable role) and Rajan (Raj Kapoor). Nina mistakes Dilip's love for friendship. Misunderstandings and unspoken feelings lead to tragedy. This classic film by Mehboob Khan can be seen as a turning point in Hindi cinema as it examines with subtlety the changing relationships between men and women in modern India.
