Film4 Summer Screen 2009 At Somerset House

30 July to 8 August 2009

Film4 Summer Screen Somerset House

London's most beautiful open-air cinema is back for 2009, as Film4 Summer Screen returns to the glorious Edmond J Safra Fountain Court at Somerset House. A cornerstone of the city's cinematic calendar, the 10-day series takes in everything from recent blockbusters to cult classics, joyful musicals to chilling thrillers - all delivered on a state-of-the-art screening set-up with full surround sound. There will also be DJs and companion events in Behind The Screen. Arrive early for a courtyard picnic before the projector starts rolling on the outdoor film event of the summer.

Opening night: Thursday 30 July
Broken Embraces
Penélope Cruz stars in the latest film from the legendary Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. To celebrate the launch of Summer Screen at Somerset House, we've got a pair of tickets to give away to the premiere - including travel from anywhere in the UK and one night's accommodation in a central London hotel, plus an invitation to the exclusive pre-film party on the River Terrace. To find out how to enter the competition and win this great prize, click here.

Friday 31 July
Alien/Poltergeist double bill (18)
From Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg come a pair of fright-filled chillers that take you from the depths of outer-space to an everyday suburban home, proving that nowhere is safe. Not even Somerset House on a Friday night.

Saturday 1 August
West Side Story (PG)
Winner of 10 Oscars, this film is a huge spectacle that really benefits from the Somerset House screen. Blazing images and Leonard Bernstein's rousing score create a classic song-and-dance romance that'll send you home singing.

Slumdog Millionaire at Summer Screen

Sunday 2 August

Let this year's Oscar-winning favourite move you, thrill you and uplift you once again, as director Danny Boyle turns a remarkable rags-to-riches tale into a dazzling display of filmmaking fireworks.

Monday 3 August
The Shawshank Redemption (15)
Share the full emotional and dramatic power of one of the most popular films ever made with 2000 fellow fans. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins may be locked up in a formidable prison, but this is one of cinema's great acts of escapism.

Wings Of Desire at Summer Screen

Tuesday 4 August
Wings Of Desire (15)
There are angels above Berlin, and they've come to Somerset House in Wim Wenders' soaring classic about a celestial being finding earthly love. The words, images and ideas are pure visual poetry.

Wednesday 5 August
Don't Look Now (18)
The eerie atmosphere of misty Venice creeps across the courtyard of Somerset House as Nicolas Roeg's 1975 masterpiece casts its sinister spell. Grieving couple Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie discover dark secrets waiting for them down the ancient city's narrow streets.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark at Summer Screen

Thursday 6 August
Strangers On A Train (PG)
A fiendishly entertaining thriller from the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. Two men meet on a train and 'swap' murders, although only one intends to carry out the criss-cross killings. It's all the fun of the fair as Hitch puts his perverse plot into meticulous motion.

Friday 7 August
Cool Hand Luke/Road House (18)
Two cool movies about American mavericks. Paul Newman is the blue-eyed anti-hero working on a chain gang in Cool Hand Luke. Brainy bouncer Patrick Swayze dispenses old school action in Road House.

Saturday 8 August
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (PG)
Harrison Ford is heroic archaeologist Indiana Jones in Steven Spielberg's essential action adventure.

  1. It's an outdoor cinema in the middle of August - that might just be the reason why it starts at 9.15...

  4. £1 booking fee per ticket rip off. Why do the films start at 9.15? Finish very late and many people will need to travel home to outer London and beyond

  6. Maybe channel 4 could consider the millions of people who don't live in London , but would still like to view these films by sometimes moving the venue outside london for a change !!!

  9. Re: music, it's actually the Aquarium movement from Suite of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens, which has a heavy influence on the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack. It was driving me crazy too before I remembered!

  17. I agree with LA. When I saw the advert for this I thought it would be great to go to this superb setting as a family (11 year old son).Only 3 films are available. Disappointing; will not be going.

  19. Great lineup, great idea... but I concur it would be lovely to do something like this in Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool or somewhere else in the north too.

  20. I really wanted to come and see West Side Story, but I live in Hertfordshire, and with the film starting at 9:15pm, I'll never make the last train home. I'm annoyed - does it really have to be that late?

  22. I remember about 12 years ago 4film did a similar thing in parks (Clapham Common). It was free and was great fun (sponsored by Stella Artois) Any chance of having something similar. Sposored events for free in parks once again. (after all channel 4 is partly funded by licence fee money, most of us are already paying.)

  23. I personally think this is a really good idea. However i think you could improve the film choice by adding more family films e.g Shrek, ice age or more recent child friendly films

  24. This is fantastic but how come you can't do the same line up in the north. There's plenty of venues.
