85 Lawrence Of Arabia 1962 - Estimated Admissions 8.4m
Superlative, multi-Oscar winning biography of T E Lawrence (Peter O'Toole), the Oxford-educated lieutenant who united Arab tribes against the Ottoman Turks in the First World War. While the story centres on the struggle of the unhinged anti-hero to help establish a united Arab nation, the vast, exquisitely composed desertscapes and breathtaking battle scenes equally linger in the audience's memory.

84 A Bug's Life 1999 - Estimated Admissions 8.41m
Pixar power! John Lasseter lobs another one out of the ballpark with this sweet-natured, incredibly vivid tale of a group of insects exploring the big, wide world. With a similar plot to The Three Amigos - "Wow, they sure are starved for entertainment" is a direct quote from the earlier film - this animated buddy movie was a box-office hit for Disney, with added kudos from having Kevin Spacey voice the villainous lead grasshopper.

83 Pinocchio 1940 - Estimated Admissions 8.5m
'When You Wish Upon A Star' sang Jiminy Cricket in Disney's second (after Snow White) feature-length fairy-tale with all the requisite layers of seriousness and darkness. Technically, the camera effects had advanced noticeably since their first foray, but it's the rich characterization and sublime score that have ensured this touching fable of Geppetto's puppet-boy is still loved today.

82 The Citadel 1939 - Estimated Admissions 8.5m
A cracking cast bring AJ Cronin's striking period drama to life in this acerbic attack on the medical profession's morals. Robert Donat is an idealistic young doctor who gives up his job in a small Welsh village to open a practice in London, only to be tempted by the dodgy dealings of an old colleague (Rex Harrison). Ralph Richardson and Rosalind Russell round off the classy support in this intelligent drama questioning medical ethics.

81 Close Encounters Of The Third Kind 1978 - Estimated Admissions 8.54m
Mashed potato mountains and that five-note tune...it could only be Steven Spielberg's spellbinding Close Encounters. The largest indoor set ever used in a movie was built in order to film the infamous climax of the Mothership's arrival, although at the start of filming, Richard Dreyfuss et al had no idea what the flying object actually was as Spielberg hadn’t yet decided. Audacious special effects for the time complicated the shoot, but the results wowed critics and audiences alike.
