5 Spring In Park Lane 1948 - Estimated Admissions 20.5m
A wealthy merchant's daughter falls in love with a servant who is in fact a down-on-his-luck nobleman. Romantic comedy starring Anna Neagle and Michael Wilding and produced and directed by Herbert Wilcox. While in America they had Bogart and Bacall and Tracy and Hepburn, in Britain we had to make do with Anna Neagle and Michael Wilding. George Lucas serves up his own homage to the Saturday morning adventure serials he loved as a kid, in the process creating one of the most revered and successful films ever. The distributors were so sure his space opera was going to be a disaster that they signed over the merchandising rights, to what would go on to become a $5 billion dollar franchise. The force, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi have achieved mythic status in western culture in probably the most popular series of all time.

3 Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 1938 - Estimated Admissions 28m
One of the all-time great Disney animations, and an unexpectedly resonant story, with oh-so-demure Snow White brilliantly counterpoised by the Wicked Queen and those great character 'actors' - the Dwarfs. The film's high position on the list might have something to do with the fact that Disney have re-released it every seven years since its debut, raking it in every time.

2 The Sound Of Music 1965 - Estimated Admissions 30m
How do you solve a problem like the Nazis? By becoming the von Trapp Family Singers and hoodwinking the SS with your floral costume and patriotic songs, of course. Julie Andrews made the hills come alive with the power of her voice in one of the most popular musicals of all time. The secret of the film's success lies in its brilliant songs, every one of them is a toe-tapping classic which will buzz around your head for days.

1 Gone with The Wind 1940 - Estimated Admissions 35m
The definitive Technicolor romantic epic. Rhett, Scarlett, burning sets and a whole slew of nostalgic and/or reactionary values, this is creator-producer David O Selznick's finest hour and a cornerstone of the Hollywood monolith. Selznick spent two years searching for the right actress, but boy was the wait for Vivien Leigh worth it as Ten Oscars and a huge amount of box office followed.
