10 The Seventh Veil 1945 - Estimated Admissions 17.9m
This Oscar-winning classic, follows a psychologist's attempt at treating a pianist with an inability to play in public. James Mason's performance as the raging shrink made him a star and helped the film become a smash hit in the UK. The Seventh Veil was typical of British fascination with psychotherapy and Freudian psychology during the 1940s. Basically, we liked it because it was a closet S&M film.

9 The Wicked Lady 1946 - Estimated Admissions 18.4m
Heaving bosoms, cross dressing and outdoor loving made this unusually racy costume melodrama from the 1940s a smash hit. Margaret Lockwood steals her best friend's betrothed and takes to the highway for kicks. The Wicked Lady was hated by critics of the time and Lockwood's considerable talent caused a sensation - it became the first British film to be cut by Hollywood censors due to cleavage. As a result, the public all loved it and Lockwood became one of the decade's biggest stars.

Director James Cameron pulls out every visual trick the Titanic's sinking, and the results are so powerful that even the most hardened cynic is drawn in. Luckily, the shrieking tones of Celine Dion are there at the end credits to bring you back down to earth.

7 The Jungle Book 1968 - Estimated Admissions 19.8m
Disney's animated-adventure has show-stopping tunes and hilarious characterisation of Mowgli the Man Cub, Baloo the Bear and, of course, King Louie - king of the swingers, that is. Abandoned in an Indian jungle as a baby and raised by wolves, Mowgli tries to live a slacker's life with his good friend Baloo, but unfortunately, Shere Khan the Tiger has other ideas for him. The Jungle Book was the last Disney film overseen by Walt Disney himself as he died in December 1966.

6 The Best Years Of Our Lives 1947 - Estimated Admissions 20.4m
William Wyler's classic emotional rollercoaster focuses on three Second World War vets who return home from the conflict to find things irrevocably changed. Not only are they physically disabled as a result of the War, but the families they left behind have also been marked and altered by events. By concentrating on the trio's inner conflict rather than their combat glories, Wyler paints a deeply moving picture of ordinary people struggling to repair their lives.
